Green Deserts
A proposal for a creative fiction TV / Feature film:
a co-production between Israel, Italy and Palestine.
Original Idea by Micha Kovler - Hocus Focus Films, Israel
"When ever I sit down in front of a foreign language film, I get a thrill as the first subtitle appears; for I know I am about to be transported into lives far from my own. Yet by the closing titles I am always amazed that though our language maybe different, our desires, our needs, our aspirations, are the same".
(Actor Jeremy Ayrons at the 1995 Academy Awards Ceremony presenting the foreign film nominees).Theory
Year 2000 is no longer a science fiction figure, but past the corner of time.
The world seems like a better place to live in. But, is it so?
In various corners of the globe, life of that unique creature, the one known as Homo sapience, a.k.a. Man, is becoming occasionally worthless.
Wars, bloodshed, hatred, derived from ethnic and religious beliefs, flourish and commences.

Films are stunning reminders, that while sustaining each nation's religious and ethnic identity, we are fast becoming one world.
Cinematic art will make it arduous to ignore universal humanity.
The Italian writer, the Palestinian professor, the Israeli architect, textile workers, football players, garage mechanics, - all share the same rich pallet of emotions. Love and hatred, tenderness and cruelty, laughter and tears - harmoniously exists in the human heart.
This is what "Green Deserts" - a creative fiction film targeted for theatrical release and TV broadcast, is concerned with:
the rich pallet of emotions in humankind, may their religious beliefs be diverse as it may be, as manifested through daily life.
By heralding thoughts, beliefs, religious origins, moral codes, and ways of life via cinema and TV to millions around the globe, the participants will expose viewers to themes rooted in their religious, cultural, sociological and psychological environment, while emphasizing the similarity and respecting the variance.

Structure.
The following structural guide-lines are introduced to help the series constitute unity and a homogenous viewing experience.
* "Green Deserts" for TV is composed of seven chapters, each of a different theme, all concerning various aspects of life.

* Each chapter is composed of three different fiction films - A Palestinian, an Italian, and an Israeli film.
Each film is Sixteen minutes long, totaling approximately 50 minutes per chapter.
* All three films within each chapter have four “guidelines”, of which all participating countries would follow, to ensure unity while emphsizing universal humanity.
These guide lines are indicated below:
Guide lines of the Chapters

2. Car Mother Music Happiness
3. Shoes Man Theatre Apathy
4. Water Woman Dance Admiration
5. Wine Friends Cinema Lust
6. Paper Lover Writing Jealousy
7. Coffee Outsider Paintings Love

TV: One chapter = 50 Min. - Three films - Three directors - Three Countries.

“Green Deserts” for the Cinema
* All films will be shot on super 16mm film, to ensure highest quality (while conforming to TV aspect) for theatrical and TV release, thus creating a homogenous quality look.
* In order to create a continues viewing experience, each film within the chapter will start with only one opening title: The country's name in the original language (translated). It will end simply with the words "The End" again, in the original language. Opening and closing credits for each chapter will be in English.
* Each of the seven films per country would later be joined into a feature film, totaling 16 X 7 = 112 minutes. The Characters in each segments would reappear in various other segments, thus enabling the director to combine his seven different chapters and provide the viewer with a feeling of unity throughout the film.
Cinema: One film = 112 Min. - Seven Segments - One director - One Country.

Content.
* Each chapter is concerned with a specific theme which constitute of a human experience.
* While each of the films within the chapter will focus on that same unique human experience, it will be written and directed by a different director from one of the three participating countries.
* For example, In the chapter called "Mother", the viewer will enjoy the interpretation of an Italian, a Palestinian, and an Israeli director to this theme - mother, each one through his religious, cultural, sociological and psychological background via his sixteen minutes film.
* The following week a chapter called "Bread" will show the same three directors interpretations to that unique culinary item - "Bread"... And so on.
