In October, I was told to schedule a trip to Israel to accompany
a group of buyers from our home office who had scheduled a buying
trip there. I was to photograph them interacting with their counterparts
and to additionally photograph lifestyle at different locations
within the country.
I was told that a driver had been arranged but I went looking for
a location scout with production experience. A Google search led
me to Micha Kovler and his company. After exchanging a few e-mails
and finally a telephone call, I gave Micha a list of needs for photography
and arranged to meet him the second day in-country.
Thanks to Micah’s professionalism and knowledge of the areas I needed
to see, I was able to photograph from places such as city roof tops
that would have been completely out of bounds had I been on my own.
Micah’s knowledge of traffic patterns, sun position, and access
to camera positions made my trip a success.
Anyone in need of location scouting, location production, or any
kind of assistance where access and timing are critical for photography
or cinematography, Micha and his company can make your project a
success. To top it off, Micha is a great traveling companion.
Thanks Micha!

Dear Mr. Kovler,
Several weeks ago, Tracy Drath, for our company, Lewis J Advertising,
contacted you about some location scouting for our upcoming trip to
Israel. Would you send us information on your fee for the information
needed below, your favored method of payment, contract, and whether
or not you would have the time to accommodate our needs? We are being
given a tour of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea on Saturday 11-9-06, but
would like to obtain some general information as noted below.
I will be traveling to Israel on Nov. 9th, arriving the 10th, to photograph
members of our client company doing business in the offices of their
suppliers, discussing business in the streets of Tel Aviv and Jaffa,
and a list of sites throughout Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and near the Dead
Sea. I will be working with our Creative Director, Steve Coppola,
to illustrate the fact that our client’s products actually do
come from around the world (Israel being one the client’s buyers
main destinations) and to come up with interesting images of interesting
places that can be enlarged to be used in 60” backlit light
boxes within the client’s stores. I will be photographing with
a medium format digital camera and a 35mm-size dslr. It some cases
I will be using a tripod and I will probably not look the part of
a pure tourist to anyone observing me if that makes a difference,
permission-wise. Our party will consist of Steve, the driver/translator,
and me.
We will not be using gaffers, grips, or assistants, in order to make
the group small and tourist-like, as much as possible.
I am mainly concerned about permission and permits if needed, the
best viewpoints and direction the site faces for images to be made
in the morning or afternoon, with a maximum 200mm lens, and any idiosyncrasies
of the areas that we will be in. I have included a list of the major
places we wish to photograph and would like your opinion of any that
would be out of the ordinary for someone to set up a camera and tripod,
to shoot.
If permits are needed, we would like your help in obtaining them,
as well.
We will be mainly indoors at the clients offices and factories on
Sunday 11/12/06 and part of Monday 11/11/06. We will shoot outdoors
in Jaffa Monday afternoon and go back to Jerusalem and the Dead Sea
areas on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will depart on Thursday.
The sites we are considering are:
Jerusalem
Rooftops of the Jewish Quarter
Temple Mount/Dome of the Rock (views from various elevations)
Western wall (from outside the immediate area as I believe general
photography is prohibited near it?)
Views of the Old City from the ramparts
Exteriors of walls, gates, and ramparts of the Old City
General views of the City of Jerusalem
Garden Tomb
Church of the Holy Sepulcher
Arches of the Coenaculum
Arches of Pater Noster
Exterior of Tomb of Zekhariah
Panoramas of Mount Scopus
Views within the Old City Market
Mount of Olives and surrounding panoramas
Dead Sea Area
Sea and cliff shots
Kumran
Views of Moab and Edom
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you,
Best regards,
